Duos, Trios, Quartets - Are they good?

I've noticed a lot of people who buy only 1-3 gods after Zeus and just stick to that. The highest level of anyone doing that I've seen was level 84 (Zues, Aphro, Hermes, Apollo).
Is this a good/fun strategy? Pros and Cons? What do you guys think?
